Dr. Melissa Essman, DSW is the Founder and Principal Consultant for Social Work for Work. Social Work for Work, offers customized clinical expertise to organizational and corporate environments. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Dr. Essman has been using a systems approach in private practice specializing in pivotal life transitions for adults, couples and families. After expanding her practice to Northern and Southern California communities, Dr. Essman created a leadership training division that utilizes her expertise in coaching executives and leaders within the context of their work systems.
Dr. Essman is an innovative researcher bringing results of her recent study to her work with organizations and leadership trainings. Her use of documentary film to distribute the study outcomes offers a creative and forward-thinking approach that she lends to her work transforming corporate cultures. She has demonstrated educational leadership throughout decades of faculty presence in higher education university settings. She holds Faculty Emeritus status after 20 years with Cal State University, Fullerton in the College of Health and Human Development and was on the faculty development team at the USC School of Social Work that piloted the first Visual Social Work Graduate Certificate Program curriculum. She is also a contributing author to the newly published What Do Social Workers Do All Day? Real Life Cases for Generalist Practice, a case study textbook for social workers.
Dr. Essman holds a doctorate in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and holds a certificate in Organizational Leadership for Social Workers from the Wharton School of Business and SP2 at UPenn. Her ongoing research examines the generational stigma associated with the Millennial Generation, yielding valuable insights that she utilizes to make an impact with individuals, families, leaders and organizations about generational diversity. Her expertise in generational trends and the underpinnings of sociocultural forces offers unique perspective in navigating important inclusion principles into micro, mezzo and macro systems.
