Sherry B. Shavit, Esq. is a Partner at Tharpe & Howell, LLP, the largest law firm in the San Fernando Valley. For nearly 20 years, Ms. Shavit has counseled and defended Fortune 500 companies to local businesses on a wide variety of labor and employment matters, including class actions, PAGA, wage & hour, whistleblowing, medical/disability leave, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. This interactive, thought-provoking presentation will discuss the history and current muddy legal landscape of employment arbitration agreements, and the advantages and disadvantages of employers implementing arbitration agreements with their current and prospective employees. The potential impact of a new U.S. Supreme Court Justice on the law on employment arbitration agreements also will be discussed. We will cover the key terms that employers should include in an arbitration agreement, and terms employers should not include. Individuals’ specific questions and concerns about arbitration agreements also will be addressed. By the end of the presentation, individuals will have the tools to evaluate whether it makes sense for their specific organization to implement or discontinue an employment arbitration program.
