Employeeship™, The Path to Leadership is a refreshing and rare approach to fostering exceptional leaders. It challenges the prevailing, yet unrealistic notion that responsibility for an employee’s development, career success, motivation, emotional stability and financial security, etc., rests with the “official” leader. It shifts the mindset toward empowerment and total personal responsibility and away from entitlement. This new way of thinking exposes and shatters the dysfunction that exists in many organizations and that is evident by an over-reliance on the “official” leader or boss to be everything. It examines and redefines the terms and performance expectations of the employee/employer “contract” and flips the hierarchical pyramid so that the employee base shares greater responsibility for their own and the organization’s success.
After completely deconstructing and dispelling past beliefs about leadership, the presenter will provide practical steps toward creating a healthy, thriving workforce of organizational contributors, owners and leaders, regardless of position, title or pay grade that are equipped to excel as 21st century public servants.

Gentles was recently appointed as the Chief People Officer for the City of Santa Monica. Previously she has promoted strategic change as human resources director for the County of Santa Barbara, vice president of HR, Diversity and Inclusion and the associate vice president of HR, Safety and Risk Management in the California State University System – Cal State Fullerton and San Francisco State campuses respective.
