Concurrent Session:
Overcoming Common Pitfalls in Diversity Initiatives
presented by Dr. Jarik Conrad, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
The world is at an inflection point. Human rights abuses, the rise of nationalism, the emergence of hate, chronic disparities based on race, age, sex, religion, and sexual orientation are occurring across the globe. These trends indicate that despite our sophisticated thinking in some areas, such as technology and medicine, we have fallen short when it comes to valuing other humans. The evolutionary instincts that paved the way for the survival of our species, such as tribalism, pose significant challenges for navigating modern life.
The way we live and the way we work is unsustainable. Corporate social responsibility must take on a new meaning if we have any hope to move society to be fairer, more just, and more human. Human resources professionals will be the drivers of this transformation, at the heart of which will be understanding and appreciating diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B). When it comes to advancing diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging in your organization, knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do. There are common pitfalls that doom even the most well intended of these efforts.
Learning Objectives include:
1. Discover common pitfalls that organizations often face in their diversity initiatives.
2. Explore how to avoid these traps and what you should be aware of.
3. Learn how you can deliver more engaging and effective initiatives aimed at making the workplace better for all employees.
